  18. <p>     Aware of Winnie Mandela's erratic behavior in recent years,
  19. many South Africans were guessing that the once-divorced Nelson
  20. might give his wife the shove following his release from
  21. prison. Not so. With Winnie facing trial in February on
  22. kidnapping and assault charges, Nelson is now springing to her
  23. defense. The government has subjected her to a "great deal of
  24. persecution," he says, adding that the press found her guilty
  25. before she appears in court. "I was unable to give her
  26. protection when I was in prison," he explains. "[But] I am now
  27. here." Should the verdict go against Mandela's wife, it could
  28. further endanger the delicate negotiations he is conducting
  29. with Pretoria.
